The idea of "sportswashing" is that saudi arabia uses sports as a way to improve their image. If you watch these events and still remember the human rights violations you kind of bypass the attempt at brainwashing you to think saudi arabia is a progressive place.
I believe all money is blood money, most things can be traced back to human rights violations somewhere, even the clothes you're wearing right now. You just choose to boycott those things which are convenient.
true i watched masters shanghai but I somehow magically did not forget the genocide in xinqiang. If you are so impressionable then you got bigger problems to worry about champ.
way to miss the point.
my entire point is that im not gonna boycot things like EWC or other sportswashing attempts because regardless of engagement I do not forget or forgive and actively inform people of the things they have done. If these money burning sportswashing attempts even slightly alter you opinion on saudi you have bigger fish to fry
I don't think it's a conscious "Oh I love this country because of esports! I don't care about their wrongdoings anymore"
Their goal is that when the average person thinks of the country, things like esports, iconic footballers, and advanced cities come to mind before the human rights violations
the thing is the average person is always going to think of pleasantries before anything else, I know people that if you asked them about north korea they would talk about "the interview" and kims daughter being hot before any atrocities committed LOL
I understand the premise, the subconscious shift in view that they are aiming for, but in the end if you are not only aware but informed on the issues that have happened and are happening and still think of saudi as a progressive place of wonder then thats genuinely on you.
sportswashing issue is too narrow minded, human rights is not only limited to sports
That sums it up nicely. The real issue is how they put that much oil money and not fix their production LOL
