Testing breach flash

I might be going insane but the numbers don't add up

The flash takes 0.5s to wind up, not including travel time. It has a "fast" weapon re-equip speed, which for a vandal is 0.6s.

This means there is a maximum time of 0.1s between the flash popping and breach being able to fire his gun (should be shorter if the flash is thrown farther away).

So why does it feel SO LONG?

Seriously, someone try this in the range please because I keep clicking WAY before I'm able to fire, even if I commit to wide swinging as it pops. Is 0.1s just way longer than I think? I mean it's literally lower than human reaction speed

I haven't tried it yet but I think the clue is in your post, the travel time. Even if it adds 0.1 second, it will throw off your expectation. Every breach flash that's not point blank will have a different final wind up time so it'll feel inconsistent and longer. Just a guess.

The travel time would reduce the difference though.

As soon as you deploy the flash, the 0.6s to pull out your gun starts counting, but the 0.5s flash windup would start later as it pops farther away.

That's why I tested this at point-blank range to feel out the maximum time difference, which feels a LOT longer than 0.1s minus travel time

Lol I dunno my brain was not working when I wrote this haha

here is a quick test video for you! Let me know if I did the testing incorrectly or missed something
The equip of flash takes 1.07 seconds, and from cast to first bullet it takes 1.20 seconds. Unless my timer is broken haha

PS: I just realised I forgot to test the timing of the actual flash being activated, but from the sound I estimate its around 0.5-0.6 seconds which matches what you said. So it seems the quick vandal equip actually starts later (my guess is the cast of the flash has a wind-down animation which adds to the 0.5+0.6 time as well)

Thank you for testing it.

Well now I'm really confused, because if the reequip starts after the flash windup (and why would it do that?) then it should be 1.10s (0.5 + 0.6).

If the flash unequip (which is 0.7s) plays before the weapon reequip, then it should be 1.30s.

So why is it 1.20 seconds 😭

It might be that the unequip time does apply before the weapon reequip and the value or the timer are just a little off. Although Skye has an even longer unequip on flashes (0.85s) and hers feel faster to swing off of. I'll have to test further

How did you set up your timer btw? Is it linked to your key presses?

Lol for the timer, I just put a generic timer (in davinci) and eyeballed it, so it might be a bit inaccurate 😅
Maybe the way I'm timing it (starts whenever there's a visual change on screen, and ends at the first shot) is different from wherever you are getting the info (maybe Val website? I'm actually curious where are you getting these values, cause afaik VAL doesn't put out specific values for their abilities, overwatch actually does in the info menu which is kinda neat) counts it, causing the smallest difference.
Now I am feeling like doing it for Skye and doing a proper comparision video. I'll post it here in the replies if I do, this one was very haphazard haha
Let me know if you want specific numbers or any other comparision or data for any other agent, no promises but if I get the time I'll do it!

Data from the game files is listed on the valorant wiki. The reason I'm still confused is because the wiki doesn't entirely explain what these numbers mean.

I was under the impression that unequip time for abilities only applied to literally unequipping the ability, and not casting it. But instant cast abilities also have unequip times.

Later today I'm gonna do some qualitative testing. Kayo flash has 0.6 unequip and fast weapon reequip, which add up to 1.20s.

If that's how it works, then he should be able to shoot before left-click pops (1.8s windup without bounce) but NOT before right-click pops (1.0s windup)

These values and explanations really should be in-game somewhere

Following up on this.

I didn't use a timer but it is true that kayo can shoot just after his right-click pops and before the left-click pops, which is consistent with it being flash unequip + weapon reequip

Skye does take even longer to pull out her gun but it feels better to swing off of because instant pops are practically undodgeable

everything about him is made clunky af i dont get it, when other support agent isn't as clunky

you get slowed when charging stun, but sova doesnt (Omen as well, but he doesn't charge his blind)
ult takes forever to activate that you often get fucked up when kayo ult, while fade feels instant
slowest, unflexible flash
aftershock is fine i guess, but still think it's also slow as fuck

I get he's supposed to feel strong but that doesn't work when he's a shit agent rn because they gutted his entire kit and stuns as a whole kinda suck tbh

This is what I'm saying tho bc his flash SHOULDN'T be clunky if all the numbers are right so idk what I'm missing

His stun does need a complete rework tho

I think his stun is fine just make it like omen/sova blind/dart charging and maybe faster charging, since the windup time doesn't differ much from Neon.
It's his flash that needs rework, make it like vyse but the flash is still instantly activated.

Bump btw does anyone else have an explanation

its supposed to be a full support agent but its tilting as fuck when someone is throwing flashes easily from a kilometre away and a stun that goes across the map so they nerfed him to feel less frustrating

Yeah so it seems likely that:

flash unequip + weapon reequip = time before first bullet

Breach flash sucks for solo play because:

  • it's too fast to have your gun out when it pops, unlike slower kayo flash
  • has a slower reequip (0.6s fast vs 0.2s instant) than Phoenix flash, which is similarly fast but you can have gun out
  • is still too slow to be reliable, unlike an instant Skye flash pop
