My mechanic is totally against Chinese cars in general, but they're getting really popular here in the UK. I've been seeing a lot more MGs, BYDs, and other Chinese brands on the road lately.

Would love to hear your honest thoughts and suggestions. I could go for a Model X, but if I take the Tesla route, I’d probably have to wait until the end of the year. TIA!

I think buying a car is based on your budget. The BYD Qin is now about $9,000 in China, and when I don't have money, I'll choose this car, but if I have $100 million, I'll go with a Porsche 100%.

well my concern before with chinese cars wasnt if they were trash or not, but whether its easy to find parts/have it serviced. So if parts are readily available/if serviceability is good then id probably at least check them out. That being said i still prefer gas cars personally, plus resale value is something i personally care about

I think buying a car should be based on your budget and not the brand of which country

not really, there are general truths to buying cars from certain countries, e.g. german cars are typically very robust

Here in my country Chinese cars become a thing 3-4 years ago, and people are really really happy. Ofc it is depends on a budget, you cannot get a brand new 10 k car and then complain about why it is not like brand new Mercedes. However if you will buy a car in the same class (does not need to be the same budget ), you will be fine. Ofc it is too early to say what will happen in 10 years, but overall they are very reliable and a lot cheaper than Western and Japanese cars. Especially luxury Chinese cars such as Zeekr and Li are incredeble. Also I would recommend not to go fully electric but a hybrid.

In my experience at least they're not good, I've driven MG's and Haval's and they just feel awful to drive. Cheap feeling, plastic interior, bad touch screen etc. Of course it depends on your budget but one of my friends' dad bought a top of the range BYD Seal ($70k AUD at the time I think) and my friend kept flexing about how cool it was and stuff. Nowadays I rarely hear him bring it up, maybe it's a good car but idk, just get a Toyota or something lol.

They start at around $46k AUD, with the top line models being a bit more like $60k. So pricey lol. Haven't seen the Qin here yet.

idk your mechanic might still think its 2010, when Chinese cars had a bad rep for being cheap and unreliable. But times have changed brands like BYD, MG, and even Xiaomi (yeah, they make cars now too) are seriously stepping up especially in the EV space. They’re not just copying anymore they are leading the global EV race with insane innovation for a good price, u get what u pay for even more ngl

ppl used to laugh at "Made in China" now they’re trying to catch up in EV. Not saying they are perfect, but they’re not the joke people used to think they were

Fair, but you can’t try every car in a lifetime, so might as well be smart about what you choose and make it a good experience
