when mentioning koreans / chinese / japanese or other country’s names in conversation, is it more polite to say their name with family name or given name first? for example, if i were discussing movies, would it be more polite to say “park chan-wook” or “chan-wook park” when referring to the director? i’ve started to tend to refer with given names first, but i would like to know if that is disrespectful or considered wrong before consistently saying names that way

last name first. it's not even a respect thing, it's just how you say the names

NA media used to get tripped over this occasionally, but with people like bong joon ho getting mainstream they figured it out. like saying "joon ho bong" sounds kind of sounds dumb and wrong, but not disrespectful, right?

like if someone called you Last name First name out of the blue, you wouldn't feel disrespected, it would just be weird lol

but in chinese there are multiple different ways depending with your relations with a person
lets take my name 须 - family name 家宣 - given name
family name - is basically surname

Surname -> Position (for respect)
if its a job position (like teacher/doctor) you said "surname" postion so 须老师
if you are meeting a new person or someone of higher status say "surname" sir so 须先生

if you are my family member and you know me well, you might refer to my nickname or "small name - 小名" which is 顺顺
and if said family member really wants your attention for example to yell at you, they will say your full name 须家宣
if you are very casual with a person, or a person of higher status is talking to you, they will often say your given name 家宣

note** if you get this wrong, no one seriously cares, asking preferance is also always good
