Sony is doing away with physical copies and it'll be all digital which will effectively kill off the majority if not the entire resale industry and I'm pretty sure that XBOX won't even have a hard drive in their next console. This means you won't actually own the game and you'll be forced to purchase a subscription service and/or digital copies which Sony and XBOX always retain the right to remove from your library whenever they like. Thoughts?

When was the last time you put a physical disc into your PC and installed and played a game?

Dude they literally have the legal rights to something you purchased and can take it away from you at anytime for any reason lol

Yeah this was the final shift to digital streaming/downloads so now it'll be impossible to own a new physical copy of a game on any medium.

digital copies clear physical tho everyone is just nostalgiabaiting. i love being able to swap games without a tray or disk, that shits great

also its good that part of the resale industry vanishes cuz theres some shady shit in there, tho obv the normal part of it being gone isnt great.

plus for non-subscription service games (digital copies), do you… know what “removing your access” means? genuinely everybody saying this is just fearmongering for 0 reason. first off, nobody will remove your access for no reason, if they do their products will never sell again and its a cheap cash grab that will plummit everybody involved into the grave. “removing ur access” is legit just hardware banning u. thats what hardware banning is. val can hardware ban you, ie removing ur access. its not that deep bro ur just fearbaiting for no reason. give me 1 good reason why devs having the ability to hardware ban you is a bad thing. if ur doing nefarious shit they should be able to brutally slime u out for it

Well if you honestly think not being able to own the physical game that you purchased and forced into an online only subscription based service is superior than you're obviously not thinking this through because they certainly do remove access to media from your library (Sony removed 500 movies right before the announcement) all the time whenever a license ends and what happens when you don't have access to internet?

a big problem is that without a used market going forward, it's going to be so much harder to buy games at a cheaper cost, and consumers are forced to stick to whatever price sony or the developers want it for. i think i bought the whole kingdom hearts collection (physical ps4 disc) for around $30 while the same collection on steam is like $170

Technically, you don't own the game when buying physical copies. Just the rights to play them cuz if it breaks or eventually deteriorates, it's gone, and you don't have rights to it anymore.

I think the main thing we should focus on is somehow having the games be ours forever, which would be done through better consumer protection
