The modern game has unfortunately diminished italy's defensive identity, that and poor management by the federation the talent pool just is not there right now
So much of our defensive plays would get booked nowadays and Italy’s domestic talent pool is shallower than a puddle in a desert and I don’t think I can name more than five players under 23 years old that are good enough to even sniff the national team. It’s like, what? Leoni, Kayode, Palestra, Pisilli, Pio, maybe Camarda in the future?
Like I don’t think Calafiori is 23 he’s probably 24, I don’t know about like Baldanzi but tbh Pafundi is probably U23
