so since I keep seeing people talk about age in gaming I wanted to look into it a bit and it’s not nearly as bad as people make it sound, reaction time peaks in your late teens to mid-20s but after that it only slows down by 1 to like 2 milliseconds per year, so by 40 you'll usually be 30 - 60 ms slower than your peak.. to put things in perspective :

A pro player’s reaction time is between 150–250 ms (some pros are between 100-250 depending on the task)
A casual 40-year-old player would be around 220–240 ms after those yearly drop, maybe 250

that's like 0.05 / 0.07 seconds or 2-3 frames at 60 fps

but is something like 0.02 seconds really that big of a deal? you get like 5 times more latency from your mouse

age doesn't have much of an effect on fps players, I think there's several factors that make it seem like it does.

for example, older players are usually ones who started playing the game earlier and as a game gains more players there's a higher chance of better talent appearing so the good players tend to be young in a game with a growing player base

in valorant in particular most of them also happen to be igls so they were bad at shooting even several years ago

there's also factors like older players being slower to adapt and losing their passion

yeah I feel like it depends on the type of player too and usually the older ones tend to go for IGL roles because of their experience, someone like ScreaM would probably still be up there aim / duel wise despite being 31

Sociablee is proof against it and botster and fen1s are proof

boaster and fns didn't even have that good of an aim at 18, I'd argue boaster's aim is probably even better now than it was years ago

in a vacuum sure but gunfights are taken in rounds after a tonne of info is thrown at the player. Younger minds tend to take on new info much faster and are therefore sharper, meaning that they can use their reaction time to its fuller extent. Older brains may become more overstimulated/ overwhelmed which can further compound losses to reaction time

I think its less about the aim/physical aspect but more of the mental aspect, getting old you aren't able to process large amount of info quickly as compared to when you are young
