it is a sort of switch, when you click shut down or whatever you are giving input to OS to close itself retracting all the power from the hardware components and it turns off!

but the electricity is in the computer box so how does clicking the mouse get the electricity out
there should be a physical switch on the pc, usually at the back where all the wires are

ACPI(advanced configuration and power interface) basically an electrical signal/command, it cuts off electricity to most of hardware (screen CPU etc), a little bit power still is there in motherboard (standby) so press power button to wake still works
