It was single elim and from the first year. That being said it's still a champions trophy so it still has it's value, just not as much as every other champions since those other ones dont have any asterisks on them.

The format does NOT value the trophy's significance. The team that won was still the best at that time.
Arguably, the first champs trophy has a historical significance too, EMEA was still the first ever region to win champs.

i think single elim is a really crappy format and doesn't always equate to the best team winning. there's a reason riot has ditched that format for years and haven't looked back

Single / Double Elimination have their pros and cons but single elim was the standard at that time. Every team played under the same conditions . You can argue how the games can be more high pressure/stakes in single elim but that doesn't matter.
Sometime in the future, who knows maybe the format could change but it won't make old trophies any less significant

you're right that every team played under the same conditions which is why i don't think it's completely worthless. however, i am willing to argue that trophy is indeed less significant because we still debate to this day whether the best team in that tournament were actually the winners. every other champions has no asterisks and the results are not really debatable.
