overall they have the funding in anything they want, combine that with a high level of nationalism (in a good way :D ) and they try to get america on top to feel so patriotic

Brainwash really should be synonym to patriotism. Saying as a Russian guy

Kind of agree, if you have to say a pledge/anthem for your country every day in school+ then it is probably brainwash

this concept is kind of disturbingly taught in a lot of schools, not as much nowadays, but definitely during the cold war era. even if they dont teach in schools explicitly anymore the main ideas are still present and parents pass on this idea as well

It's kinda teached in school that America is a democracy and is patriotic. Well I guess every country does that. But add trump to the mixture to bring all the idiots together. You get a cesspool of Patriotic degeneracy.

Every country is going to promote nationalism though so saying Americans being patriotic isn't really fair.

Like what country is going to be negative about their countries history and pride? If that happens, the political situation in there must be fucked to new levels.

Patriotism is extremely important for the well being of a country
Lack of patriotism leads to internal clashes, anti national movements, terrorism etc
For a country to be strong and develop it requires the trust, unity and support of its citizens

I don't think they are more patriotic than others, its just that their patriotism and culture is different compared to a lot of other countries. Good and easy example is flags for example. In USA people show respect and pride towards their flag by portraying it everywhere from schools to houses etc. While in countries like Finland (where I am from) people show respect and pride towards the flag by only showing it during important events. We see the American way as disrespectful. Obviously you also need to add that in general Americans may not know as much about the world (outside of USA) compared to people who come from places like Europe. So they may not realize their faultiness. People here see Americans as ignorant and arrogant.

I don't find that Americans are that patriotic. Sure they are a bit more than the average country. But I think they are beat by other countries like Israel, South Korea and China.

Can you give me some examples of what makes you think US is more patriotic than China?

I feel like USA is patriotic at surface level - chanting USA at sporting events, flying flags on their porches, etc.. But plenty of Americans are divided on many issues at a political level, or don't care about what their country does at all on the international stage. Just as an example, many Americans are laughing and criticizing their own country for their actions in Afghanistan 20 years ago after what happened over the last few weeks.

Now, let's look at China. When the Free Hong Kong movement was happening around the world and people were demonstrating in solidarity, Chinese nationalists were interrupting the demonstrations in cities around the world. Canada, Australia, UK to mention a few. Chinese netizens are also extremely defensive about any criticism towards their country online.

As for Israel and South Korea, the people from both countries have been oppressed heavily throughout history. One of the contributing reasons for their patriotism is this shared suffering. In fact, there is even a term for this in Korean called Han. Furthermore, when a Korean athlete does something great on the world stage, Koreans are particularly proud of the person for being Korean. News channels will broadcast news of their achievements centering heavily about how great and proud they are to have them represent their country on an international stage. They will do this for weeks if not months. Examples: athletes like Kim Yuna, Park Jisung, Son Heungmin, Haseong Kim, etc...

Anyways, that's my reasoning as to why I think these countries are more patriotic than USA. But I'm open to discussion as to why you think otherwise.

I was about to ask #31 for some research or study that shows how "insanely" patriotic China is, srs. Even more so compared to USA. Feel free to do it, if you feel like(the same applies to south korea).

And I honestly don't get your point on Free Hong Kong movement. The chinese people that were born in hong kong were concerned about the increased risk that hong hong citizens(and foreign nationals passing through the city) could be sent a trial to mainland china, where the courts are under chinese political control. It was a shock of "interest", you couldn't expect anything different from a authoritarian state. This is not indicative of patriotism.

now if you google for "most patriotic countries" or something similar you'll find USA in every single page. It's quite easy to find relatively relevant pages that cover this topic.

A couple bits of reading then...

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-05/ccp-patriotic-education-young-people-in-australia/100260298

The long-term propaganda campaign pushed by the Chinese government, used to instill a widespread populous holding embedded nationalistic/patriotic views. Also, anecdotally, the Chinese people are typically very proud (understandably so, given their history) and this lends itself to a sense of superiority and loyalty to their nation.

As for a bit of scholarly data, from a respected publication...

https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2021/05/05/5-national-pride-and-shame/

The US is not as patriotic these days as many people think (on average, it is less proud than Germany, the UK, and France). Patriotism is on the decline in the states. And a bit of quick research shows that the opposite can be said for China; that is, patriotism is on the rise in the PRC.

So about the Free Hong Kong movement. The point I was trying to make was that like you said, people who were born in Hong Kong were concerned and protesting against the CCP. However, people born in mainland China were actually interrupting the demonstrations of the Hong Kong people in countries outside of China. So the point I was trying to make was that the Chinese people being very nationalistic and patriotic, not the Hong Kong people.

If I Google "most patriotic countries", the first link is from borgenmagazine which places USA as #1 most patriotic country. However, it gives basically no explanation for the ranking, and references an article from Forbes from 2008. The Forbes article also makes no attempt as explaining why they put USA at #1. The second link is a poll where they asked people in different countries if they thought they lived in the best country in the world. And US topped the poll with 41% of their sample believing they lived in the best country in the world. To me, that is not a very good example of patriotism, but I guess this is a pretty subjective topic.

Anyways, you asked me for why I think China and South Korea is more patriotic than the US, and I gave them to you.

I understood your point. But as I said, the movement was against a measure acting in favor of mainland china and against hong kong. There is nothing more natural than the hong kong population to demonstrate against the measure, and china to boycott the demonstration(even more coming from an authoritarian state).

And as for post #42, many countries have what you can call a "long-term propaganda". The US included, and for longer.

Just to make clear, I never said that china is not a patriotic nation (it is, mostly due to brainwashing and state imposition, but it is). It's just not as much as the US, at least to this day.

Would you call North Korea a patriotic country when its population can't choose not to be? This is what happens in china, on a smaller scale.

If you're referring to primarily on these forums, it's simply the NA vs EU argument. But where EU is a multitude of countries all taken as one entity, NA is primarily the US. So it's natural, in these debates, for the NA side to sound very patriotic and "as one" as compared to a much more diversified EU.

In real life? I'd say the US is more patriotic than average but definitely not the most. China comes to mind as a place that's definitely more patriotic than the US. But two things make the US seem worse.

1) Americans, as we all know, are a loud and brash group. Our form of patriotism is often very loud and in your face. That can make the patriotism seem like a lot.
2) There's a lot of Americans. It's a big country. The sheer volume of people voicing patriotic stances online can make it seem like we are the most patriotic people on earth.

I think there's also just a sensitivity, amongst Americans, about foreign people shitting on us. This is a country full of proud people, and a lot of us tend to get overly defensive when we feel disrespected. We're not all like that (I've never been particularly patriotic) but this is just my view from within the borders.
