You are not part of the team you support

Why do people keep referring to the team as 'we', as if they are part of the team. Then, some of them also go and act like they know exactly what the team is thinking and doing at all times. I am not only talking about this site but also youtube and twitter.

It has to do with our psychological attachment to a team, and in the literature, it’s called 'fan identification.' So, [the common term is] 'BIRGing,' which means 'basking in reflected glory.' When the team is successful, we tend to associate that we’re part of the team as well, so that's why you hear 'We played great,' and that’s because of this high level of identification we have with the team that supports our own self-esteem. We associate the success of the team with our own success.

It really comes out of research in psychology [in the ‘90s], where people were studying team identification. For example, how strongly I identify with the Philadelphia Eagles. And what they found was that for some people, it’s part of their self-esteem. So when the Eagles do well, it makes me feel better about myself and it also is part of my membership in a group. Other people stand around and have this shared experience, and that relates to group membership and individual self-esteem. One of the ways we retain our strong connection to the team is by really connecting ourselves as closely as possible, so when the team does well, in some ways, we’re part of that accomplishment.

i mean think about it like this, a team from the country you are from wins the world cup. and that makes you prouder to be from that country as you've been supporting them throughout the world cup. now i guess people who are older than you would agree more but they'd refer to themselves as 'we' since theyve been supporting the journey and when your favourite team wins, doesnt it make it feel like you won? like the SEN fans when they won iceland I could only imagine the joy they felt in sharing the same emotions of victory. again, people from texas when the cowboys win the superbowl will feel as happy as if they won, this feeling is coming to valorant and makes people say 'we' a lot more

I understand feeling happines and joy from a team you support winning, but what about the people who speak as if they are the team, like talking about how 'their team' is currently doing this or that.

In traditional sports fans resonate with teams and its literally noted that teams arent complete with fans
Any sports whether it be esports or traditional sports wouldnt be the same without fans so i guess thats why they get attached to feeling like they’re part of it

It's honestly fine. Some people just kinda identify themselves with the team they support. This is kinda why flairs exist. To show that you have a team you support. This is kinda like with their nationality when their country wins a international sports event or like the olympics. You aren't a part of the team. But you support them so much that you can't help but feel that you identify with them.

I honestly don't feel this way. But many people do. I do fanboy some teams. But it's mostly because of how they play. It's not really their players. Their management. Their brand. For me. Teams are just artists who show their take on the game.

Just kinda ignore them. And just don't take it super seriously. Because they probably aren't either. But if they are taking it seriously. Then just ignore them.

This is the weirdest take. Half the fun in being a fan is being fanatic and super attached to your team. That's the point. Competition is hardly any fun without a rooting interest. And that rooting interest is amplified if you, as a fan, feel like you're part of the thing that's happening.

Also why do people give a shit about this? You're just looking for something to nitpick at that point.

100% i wonder how this actually got 5 upvotes, if it wasn't for the fans valorant, esports, no just sports in general would be nothing more than some---, sports esports wouldnt even be the way it is today

Yeah this kinda pisses me off but I guess its just normal people in sport have been doing it for ages so it becomes normal. Personally when I play its kinda weird seeing people saying we or our to my team but I guess its just people being supportive.
