I'm pretty new to the esports scene. What should be the qualifications for a tournament to be considered a major? Is it the prize pool or something else? I've seen people here call the Masters Stage as majors while others don't so it's kind of confusing.

The circuit for valorant and csgo are pretty different, so it just kinda depends on how important you think the masters are. Majors are basically the most prestigious tournaments in csgo, so the equivalent for valorant would be champions, but masters is also an international lan with top teams, so some people say masters are also comparable to majors.

In other esports, Major is a tournament which is directly funded by the game's devs. For example TI in DOTA and the Major in CSGO. However, Riot funds all the global tournaments like masters, champions in Valorant and MSI, Worlds in LOL. So, there isn't really a definition for Major here, just that Champions is the biggest tournament of the year with biggest prizepool, production and no of teams, that's why it's a major and masters is not.

There’s only been one champions. An online LAN does not mean a major. People thinks so when comparing it to CS since there are two majors a year. But every other single esport and even regular sport has just one, and that is champs

The problem is comparing it to CS, the only esport where there are two majors a year. When comparing it to Lol it’s a bit more clear that Champions is Worlds

Yea, it would be better to compare to worlds, but people always want to compare csgo and valorant.

exactly its like COD too, there are 4-5 LANs during the year to qualify for COD Champs at the end where u can actually win a ring

in Rocket League they call 3 of the 4 LANs "Majors", but yeah I would just call it a LAN, the only real major is Worlds
