Champions format

I’ve seen a lot of format discussions lately, here’s what I think would be an ideal format for Champions:

20 teams flown out, 12 main event, 8 play-ins:
Top 2 NA points
Top 2 EMEA points
Top 2 APAC points
Top 1 JP points
Top 1 KR points
Top 1 BR points
Top 1 LATAM points
Top 2 NA LCQ
Top 2 EMEA LCQ
Top 2 APAC LCQ
Top 2 SAM LCQ
Top 2 East Asia LCQ

12 ready for MAIN EVENT:
Top 2 NA points
Top 2 EMEA points
Top 1 BR points
Top 1 LATAM points
Top 1 SAM LCQ
Top 2 APAC points
Top 1 JP points
Top 1 KR points
Top 1 East Asia LCQ

8 in PLAY-INS (top 4 qualify):
Swiss stage with 3 rounds. 2 wins to qualify, 2 losses is elimination.

Top 2 NA LCQ
Top 2 EMEA LCQ
Top 2 APAC LCQ
Runner-up SAM LCQ
Runner-up East Asia LCQ

  • When seeded, a region cannot play its own region in round 1 (applies for NA, EMEA & APAC).
  • When seeded, a #1 LCQ seed cannot play against another #1 LCQ seed in round 1 (applies for NA, EMEA & APAC).

MAIN EVENT SWISS STAGE (16 teams):
Swiss stage with 3-5 rounds. 3 wins to qualify, 3 losses to be eliminated. Top 8 teams qualify.
Top 2 NA points
Top 2 EMEA points
Top 2 APAC points
Top 1 BR points
Top 1 LATAM points
Winner SAM LCQ
Top 1 JP points
Top 1 KR points
Winner East Asia LCQ
Play-ins 2-0
Play-ins 2-0
Play-ins 2-1
Play-ins 2-1

  • When seeded, two teams of the same region cannot play eachother for round 1.
  • When seeded, a #1 circuit point team cannot play another #1 circuit point team for round 1 (applies for NA, EMEA, APAC).
  • General circuit points should be taken into account when seeding for round 1. High points against lower points.

MAIN EVENT PLAYOFFS (8 teams):
Single elimination bracket. Grand finale best of 5, all others bo3. Audience + venue for playoffs.

3-0 swiss - swiss 3-2
3-1 swiss - swiss 3-1
3-1 swiss - swiss 3-1
3-0 swiss - swiss 3-2

Pros with this format:

  • Builds up more hype! More teams get playtime and increases importance of LCQs. LCQs are good because they reflect on recent performance, instead of points gathered half a year ago.
  • Forced international matchups in round 1 for play-ins and main stage swiss stage for exciting games
  • Teams that directly qualified to Champions gets an advantage by skipping play-ins
  • Regions that do not have a direct main stage qualification from LCQ (NA, EMEA, APAC) get awarded with two teams in the play-ins, instead of just one (East Asia, SAM), as they already have one team directly qualified for the main event.
  • Literally the existence of swiss stage
  • Increased tournament length to make up for having a limited amount of internationals
  • Teams with more points get seeded against teams with lower points for round 1 main event swiss stage. Awards earlier performance in VCT 2022.

Cons with this format:

  • Rito small indie company
  • I have approximately 7 IQ

it would be a lot easier yes, but it’s far too early for Riot to implement 24 teams for val … unfortunately. me discussing the idea of having 20 already requires massive doses of copium

yes 24 teams is ideal, but this would be a good step in the right direction. also for riot to experiment the swiss format before organizing a 24 team tourney :)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this would be 50 total matches, right? The most any Masters/Champions event has had so far was 28, so this would pretty much force Riot to play two matches simultaneously during the swiss stages

What's the problem to play 2 matches simultaneously
CS does that every event, sometimes even 3 at the same time

I don’t think it’s a problem, but LoL Worlds still only plays one match at a time in its play-in stage so it seems unlikely. I guess it’s fine for them to not overlap if most of the matches are going to be bo1 anyway, so they’d probably keep their scheduling how it is now

Yes obviously they’d keep the already existing format, this is just me sharing my ideal champions :)

Stream A/Stream B would be a good system to partially implement for this type of tournament though, casual viewers mainly only watch deciding games + their favourite team/player. Not all days need stream A/stream B. Playins round 1 and main event round 1 + 2 could have hybrid streams. That’s 20 matches being played over the time that 10 matches would’ve taken. This way the deciding games are streamed exclusively too

2 directly qualified for main event with 2 LCQ teams in play-ins is fair for NA. They still have two international titles, SEN may have fallen off their throne since then, but they were undeniably unstoppable in M2 2021.

How long would this take to complete with only one stream? This single stream format is one of the reasons why riot format is so add.

if this happens with franchising, i hope the LCQs for Champions have open qualifiers, kinda like DOTA TI or R6 Six Invitational

I hope Riot implements a similar system to the VRLs as a t2 competitive circuit. Best VRL teams get LCQ spots. Allows for an open esports environment for aspiring players and orgs, whilst still ensuring that all franchised teams can’t be relegated

it’s 20 teams that become 16 after playins. more spots is always better, this system allows for regions to show their best teams, sometimes really good teams get cut just short off the finish line

Exactly! I was gonna make a post like this with the franchising and open regional leagues for T2 mixed with the CS Major format, for me it's the best solution fr, it's not a shame to admit CS did it better on this case.
Also, I've already commented on another post, they can call the 3 different stages as "Ascendant Stage", "Immortal Stage" and "Radiant Stage"

I like the idea with the names but realistically it’d be something else to avoid confusion with the ranks. Similar situation to how Radiant was called Valorant before

Probably something like Rivals Stage etc

I like your tournament formatting, but yeah Riot wouldn't implement something like this until later. For League of Legends, they didn't add Play-Ins for Worlds (biggest tournament for League) until 2017, so we'll have to wait a few years.
