That'll teach em not to pick an SA team in the playoffs

it's been like this forever, I like it, gives an extra bonus to the teams who got top 4 in groups because they get to dodge the BO1s. They're always exciting to watch too, the only time I can recall where I wished they weren't BO1 was after the TI8 Alliance Gyrocopter incident.

I think if these teams played another two games it would have devolved into total ranked chaos after playing 7/8 maps in a row

Ah, that makes sense.

tbh I don't really know what quantifies as CIS in esports because even Ukraine isn't in the CIS organisation. So yeah in my head - next to Russia = close enough I guess

The difference is in the head-to-head, Fnatic have a h2h win against 3/4 of the teams that they can still tie with, so they'll always go through. Guild on the other hand have a head-to-head win against BIG, which is useless for tiebreakers because Guild can't tie with BIG anymore.

posted about a year ago

I found tiebreaker rules in the official rulebook: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HsqsXRKtKmZgkxqU-SwATAChvY90gzYoZumhpYbRqks/edit
Usually I find these rulebooks via the Liquipedia page and then clicking the rulebook button on the right. These rulebooks generally aren't the easiest to find though, depending on the esport as well.

The official tiebreaker is head-to-head first, however, the VLR standings are sorted by map wins rather than H2H because it's easier to sort by.

The math is complicated, but Guild aren't quite confirmed just yet. If a very specific combination of results happens they could still come fourth, but in practice they're pretty much confirmed.

Edit: to elaborate on this, if:

  • M3C, BBL and NAVI all win their next two matches, and
  • Guild lose their next two matches

then M3C will be first, with Guild, BBL and NAVI in a 3-way tie for second, and then Guild would lose the head-to-head against both to come fourth.

Ik werd een Fokus fan toen ik coverage van EMEA promotion deed, er was geen Engelse stream voor sommige van de Fokus games dus ik moest de Duitse stream kijken en hun enthousiasme was aanstekelijk

(btw not sure how did this comment ended up somewhere else in the thread I swear I replied to this comment lol)

unironically this. LOUD or ZETA winning is a much cooler storyline than OpTic winning.

as it stands, KOI and Giants are in first, both on 6-2, and Rebels, Case, and Queso are on 5-3. You need to be top 2 to get a bye in the playoffs. KOI and Giants play each other, so winner gets the bye (ends 7-2) and the other team ends 6-3. Rebels play Arctic, should be ez win, 6-3. Case play Heretics (disaster roster, 1-7 atm) ez win, 6-3. Queso play Movistar Riders, ez win. If all this happens, 4 way tie for the last playoff spot. Then again, it's all bo1s so it will probably be chaos and none of this will happen
