Shimada San Ishii, more commonly known as Dr. Ishii [1], was a World War 2 doctor and scientist under the Japanese empire, and is most well known as being the founder of modern bee science [2]. In 1942, Ishii set out to determine the exact number of bee stings required to kill a man, and used test subjects supplied to him by imperial Japan's war efforts. His first attempt at the experiment went awry, as, after getting 212 bee stings in, he realized one of the bees he had just used was in fact a wasp [3]. Furious, Dr Ishii cast the test subject into a vat of honey [4]. On his second attempt at the experiment, Dr Ishii successfully killed the patient after a plethora of bee stings, but in his enthusiastic endeavor, forgot to count the bee stings entirely [5]. This would not have been an issue, had Ishii simply counted the bumps present on the patient's skin, but, as he famously stated; "to stare at a man's skin for so long is enough to drive someone mad... A task not for the weak-minded, nor the heterosexual, for which, i am the latter." [6]. On the day of his third and final attempt at determining the amount of bee stings required to kill a man, Dr Ishii wrote in his journal of great success, claiming he had definitive evidence as to the quantity of bee stings required to kill a man; however, before he could take his pen to paper and immortalize the findings of his magnum opus, Ishii was attacked and killed by his spouse, who he had believed to be a Japanese man, but was instead a Russian wasp [7]. Due to the rise in ethical concerns, 'bee science' as patented by Dr Ishii himself, has declined in popularity in recent years, which has hurt its funding and the beginning of new projects. Perhaps the mysterious secrets of bee science will forever remain undiscovered.
