Once again, it comes down to the purpose. What's the point of Valorant, at the end of the day? To make money. What's the point of EWC, on the other hand? It's not to make money, it's to paint the Saudi government in a better light and to distract from their atrocities. Riot doesn't run Valorant and VCT just to get people off the CCP's back, but the whole point of EWC is exactly that. It doesn't make money, it's not supposed to make money.

There's a difference though, isn't there? Riot is owned by Tencent which is based in China, sure, but EWC is an event that is DIRECTLY sponsored by the Saudi government, and specifically for sportswashing purposes. With Valorant, you can say it's indirectly connected to something that's connected to something that could be a bad thing, but EWC itself is the bad thing, not just via connections.
