so i actually went to g0m at my uni once believe it or not but i just went and did nothing and left cuz i got imtimidated by the atmosphere

  1. what if as soon as i start using the gym equipment the machine just suddenly collapses cuz i handled it wrong or smth are they gonna make me compensate for the damage

  2. what if theres a hidden rule or smth like “the dumbbell on this rack is reserved for big guys and all the fatsos have to use the crusty one over there and if you use the ones for the big guys everyone in the gym will think you’re retarded”

At the start it is intimidating but just do it
Even if you do stupid stuff no one cares, the most that will happen is somebody makes you aware of your stupidity

First of all, good on you for taking a step in the right direction. It's actually fairly common to feel overwhelmed at first.
1) Gym machines don't really just collapse suddenly. Maybe that feeling comes from not being sure on how to use the machines correctly, try youtube channels like Jeff Nippard to learn about forms, how to split targeting different muscle groups, etc.
2) if there's a rule like that and you violate it people will tell you that, they won't kill you. It may not feel like it at first but the gym community is actually really helpful and we like to see each other grow. No one judges newbies.

like ppl have said up top you’re just overthinking it.

with my own experience in the gym it’s pretty easy to tell if a machine is faulty and so do the staff. they’ll usually put a out of service sign on it rq. also you would be able to hear it or see it if a cable is loose or on the verge of snapping. learn how the machine works and how to use it and you should tell.

secondly the gym is for everyone of all shapes, sizes, ages, and genders. I promise you like 99% of the ppl who go aren’t concerned with you. they’re just trying to get a quick lift in and get out. you shouldn’t feel embarrassed for taking dumbbells, gyms are a community thing, most ppl will just do another exercise and wait for you to finish using the dumbbells you’re using. the only “hidden” rule is to be mindful of your space especially if it’s packed.

other than that, you’re all good dude. going to the gym is already a great step in taking care of yourself. a lot of ppl struggle with that step. just do you o7

  1. Highly unlikely for that to happen, if it does then it's on the gym for bad maintenance cuz that's a safety hazard. If you wanna be cautious about misuse, honestly just following the images shown on the gym equipment is good enough. Alternatively, you can try and imitate how the person before you uses the machine (imo not always great since there can be questionable form sometimes, so i'd rather follow the icons or look up the exercise myself online)

  2. There isn't a hidden rule unless you went to some weird underground lowkey gym spot. Just remember, everybody that goes to the gym is there just to exercise, whatever they use is because of their own personal workout plan, not cuz of a rule or anything like that. If you feel insecure or anxious since only the "big guys" use the weights, there's usually an alternative (cables, machines, etc.) to get a good workout in, so you always have that option.

It's def intimidating to go to the gym if you've rarely/never gone to it and stuff, so you can always take smaller steps to get used to it (e.g. just go to the gym and workout for 20 minutes, then progressively increase your exposure). Don't let the discomfort stop you from bettering your health, you'll be fine and you'll feel better after
