Valorant Champions - Format idea

Hello guys, in this post I will share a format that I think would be good for Champions. This is only my opinion and if you have a different one share it with me, if you think some things are not right tell me.

First of all we know that 16 teams will go to Champions:

  • 2 NA
  • 1 NA LCQ
  • 1 BR
  • 1 LATAM
  • 2 SA LCQ
  • 2 EMEA
  • 1 EMEA LCQ
  • 1 KR
  • 2 SEA
  • 1 JP
  • 1 APAC N LCQ
  • 1 APAC S LCQ

In the format I thought, Champions would be divided into two phases:

  • Swiss Format (with all teams)
  • Single Elimination Bracket (8 teams)

SWISS FORMAT

One thing that a tournament like Champions can give to us is international matches, so for the first round the seeding would be randomly but teams of the same region can't face each other. In total there are 5 rounds, and if a team win 3 games they make de second phase (Playoffs).
OR
They can make 8 teams be seed#1 and the others seed#2, for example:
seed#1 - 2 NA, 1 BR, 2 EMEA, 1 KR, 1 APAC and 1 JP;
seed#2 - 1 NA (LCQ), 1 LATAM, 2 SA (LCQ), 1 EMEA (LCQ), 1 SEA , 2 APAC (LCQ APAC N and LCQ APAC S)
These seeds are only for the first round! After the first round it is the same as the previous idea.
(ALWAYS TRY TO AVOID GAMES WITH TEAMS OF THE SAME REGION)

I think that a format like this for the first stage is more interesting than 4 groups of 4 teams.

SINGLE ELIMINATION BRACKET (PLAYOFFS)

In this stage we will have 8 teams that were like this in the previous phase:

  • Team 1,2: 3-0
  • Team 3,4,5: 3-1
  • Team 6,7,8: 3-2

Teams with the same score can't face each other in the 1/4 finals, and the teams that went 3-0 go to the opposite sides of the bracket.
Like this:
#1 | Team 1 vs Team 3
#2 | Team 4 vs Team 8
#3 | Team 5 vs Team 7
#4 | Team 2 vs Team 6
#5 | Winner #1 vs Winner #2
#6 | Winner #3 vs Winner #4
#7 | Winner #5 vs Winner #6

SCHEDULE

Champions will last 19 days, and will always be the biggest tournament of the year!

Round 1/2/3 - 9 days (Swiss format)
Day 1/4/7 (3 games each day)
Day 2/5/8 (3 games each day)
Day 3/6/9 (2 games each day)

Round 4 - 2 days (Swiss format)
Day 10/11 (3 games each day)

Round 5 - 1 day (Swiss Format)
Day 12 (3 games)

After the first stage the players have a break of 3 days, and then the playoffs begin.

Quarter Finals
Day 16/17 (2 games each day)

Semi Finals
Day 18 (2 games)

Final
day 19 (1 game)

GAMES
All games would be bo3 and the final bo5 (or bo3). In total we would have 40 games.
A team to win Champions would have to play a minimiun of 6 games (if they win all games).

Interesting thought. I think the hardest part with this would be dividing up the teams into "groups" where they would play their 5 matches or whoever they are intended to play. I do think this is something similar to what could happen, however i think there also needs to be a lower bracket for playoffs, because there could be a larger luck factor without 2nd chance than with it

Thanks for you reply,

i think it is not that hard to divide the teams in groups since it is only in two groups and is only for the first round, and they already do that with seeding in other events.

Luck is a factor that always exist. A tournament with this format, a double elimination bracket, doesn't make sense at all. And a bracket being all or nothing is always really cool to see.

probably do -1 SA LCQ +1 EMEA LCQ

other than that, i agree
edit: of course i'm getting downvoted by delusional bronzil fans. any SA LCQ is basically just another slot for Brazil. having the same number of slots for bronzil and emea makes no sense whatsoever

didnt say this before but i think they could do what they did last year and masters 3 automatically qualifys for champs

i agree with you, but I have no problem with the ones presented by riot

same. Feel like SA+LATAM slots are 1 too high, but i personally couldn't care bc i want to see more people around the world get represented even if they are a minor region

Great idea, I think it'd be better to just have a 24 team masters though. Also what do you mean by APAC N and APAC S?
I'm guessing you mean like East Asia(KR/JP/CN?) for APAC N, and South-East Asia for APAC S. Where's SA(India/Pakistan/Bangladesh) then? I would rather just have a huge APAC LCQ LAN that has teams from all over for like 2-4 spots. Or add an LCQ spot for India + Middle East/Africa, which could be possible.
I'm guessing they would have to change up the whole circuit then, because maybe only 2 masters before champions probably for a huge LAN qualifier.

I mean I can only wish it was 24 team masters, but I guess it's unfortunate really. I will go over my opinions on 16 teams, 4 teams per continent seems stable imo, and good for growth of the game. Idgaf people say some regions are weak, but honestly I don't know how else I would do this. I think maybe we could integrate LATAM-S into BR, and LATAM-N into NA, and that's the only thing I think I could change, and I don't think that's happening now.

3 NA
1 NA LCQ(NA+OCE)

Maybe you could split it 2-2, but I think it's better 3-1.
3 EMEA
1 EMEA LCQ(EMEA+MENA or literally EMEA but actually EMEA)

2 BR
1 SA LCQ(BR+LATAM)

1 KR/JP
1 SEA
3 APAC LCQ(East Asia(KR/JP/CN?)+SEA(VN,TH+SA)

the number of teams I put are the ones riot shared they were going to be. If you search probably you´ll find what countrys are in APAC N and APAC S.

I agree with you, 24 teams would be great!

I honestly just really like the idea of a united APAC qualifer lol, Imagine like 36 high level pro teams just decking it out on lan or smth. I guess you can make seeding highly based on circuit points which will make this pretty darn cool, and tone down fluke wins from early in the year.

#1 | Team 1 vs Team 3
#2 | Team 4 vs Team 8
#3 | Team 5 vs Team 7
#4 | Team 2 vs Team 6
#5 | Winner #1 vs Winner #2
#6 | Winner #3 vs Winner #4
#7 | Winner #5 vs Winner #6

I think it'd be better to keep track of the round differential, then match :
Team 1 v Team 8
Team 2 v Team 7, where 7 & 8 are the teams with the least rounds
then
Team 3 v Team 6
Team 4 v Team 5

Other than that I think your format is interesting. However, I think I much prefer a double elim bracket. The idea of a cinderella run is too good to pass up after the latest Reykjavik.

Realistically, I don't think there will be any changes to the format between masters and champions besides the increased team count since the focus will have already shifted to next year's 3-league qualifier system.

True, for group stages, round differential is more reliable. Your points on everything else make sense as well.

I don't think I even noticed, it was my mistake. But I agree with this change.

About double elim bracket, i like it but for this format dont make sense (for me). A cinderella run is always good!

Riot usually listen the fans and players so if we give ideas or give our opinion they can change somethnig.

I agree with this format except top 8 should be double - elim because single elim is just way to short

Its already a 19 days tournament and with this format, imo, a double elim bracket no make sense at all. But i like double elim brackets for cinderella runs.

yeah but u go through all that work to eliminate 8 teams and then the top 8 is decided by single elim just doesn't feel right. If anything it should be the other way around

in my opinion the first stage , is the stage where you can make mistakes and comeback. But the playoffs my friends is all or nothing. The teams have to give everything

if u want a more accurate winning team and places then you need more than single elim, its like having a bunch of worthless matches and a few really really highstake matches, its not a very good balance

but if you do a double elim bracket would be many days, and we know that is not a thing :/

tbh i would like to know the players opinion
