Reykjavik Format Leaked?

On the Reykjavik: Stage 1 page it shows how there is going to be an initial group stage, followed by the bracket playoffs, which most of us probably expected.

But it shows how 4 teams will be eliminated by the end of the group stage. These 4 eliminated groups will be placed at 9th-10th place and 11th-12th place. To me, this indicates that there will be a larger single or double group stage similar to this one or this one, with the top 8 advancing into a bracket style playoff and the bottom 2 from each group, or the bottom 4 if there is only one large group, being eliminated.

I also believe there's some credibility to this as vlr.gg has also been able to previously find out and post about info from international tournaments such as the amount of prize money for Berlin last year on their page before that information was released publicly by Riot.

Most likely it'll be double group stage

What I'm worried about though is if the situation will be similar to last year, bad pcs and stuff

I think it's only practice pcs that were bad, but I doubt rito will make the same mistake.

Considering the duration of the tournament, there should be a group stage with 2 groups of 4 where top2 of each group go through to the next phase as you said and then playoffs as a double elim bracket, otherwise it doesnt make sense that the event takes 14 days

There are 12 participating teams though. 2 groups of 4 would encompass only 8 teams. How about the other 4?

#11

Don't the top seed skip group stage ?

#14
Vortexy

That's difficult to manage fairly without causing outrage from one community or another. Who would these 4 teams who skip groups be then?

Wasn't it leaked that 1st place from each region skips groups. So FPX, TGRD etc

its already confirmed, guard, fpx, prx, and kru/lev/loud will most likely skip groups

#19

FPX makes sense to skip. So does Guard ig. But why PRX when I can safely say that teams like DRX, Optic, or G2 are most likely better?

#22
craxfps

Frags

It's just the 1st place from each region

#24
Vortexy

DRX is first from their region. And I'm willing to bet that they would beat PRX like they did before.

#39
idkbro

but its only the 2 team regions, drx is not first, they are just the only team from korea, they might be better but since apac has 2 slots they will be the ones to skip groups alongisde the other multislot region (EMEA, NA, South America), riot has no way to measure if drx or prx is stronger so they wont choose who gets to skip groups on their opinion on which is the better team lmao

#42
Vortexy

I mean, they kind of do have a way to measure. Drx beat Prx 2-0 before at Berlin. Also Kr has had better results than Sea within Valorant's short history.

#29
SeulgiVLR

Frags

no, its the 1st place from the top 4 regions as per champs
because of this: fpx (emea), kru/lev/nip/loud (latam), guard (na), paper rex (apac)

#40
Vortexy

Frags

If it's from the top 4 regions from champs, then it can't be Loud since they're from Brazil, their own region which is unaffiliated with Latam. And also most likely not the winner of LCQ between NIP and loser of Lev/Kru since they're just going to be statistically only the 2nd best team from their own region. The only option would be the winner of Lev/Kru.

#41
SeulgiVLR

i thought that too but apparently whoever wins latam vs br decides either:

  • the region thats seeded higher
    or:
  • whether latam will be seeded above latam v. br (in which case, br is placed higher if they win)

Why PRX? coz PRX qualified as 1st seed from a APAC which is a HUGE region meanwhile DRX qualified from a much much weaker region with little to no competition

#47
Vortexy

Frags

"much much weaker region"??
Kr has performed better than Sea overall in Valorant's short history

"little to no competition?"
didn't Drx get 2-0'd by ONS or something?

#50
OzyMeister

Frags

Korea is a single team dogshit region with no competition
APAC is a Giant region with huge number of teams

even IF DRX was better than PRX, PRX has proved themselves by paving their way through whole APAC to qualify as 1st seed thus earning better seeding
What has DRX done to earn it this year? 3-0d and 2-0d ONS? A nonamer team which couldn't get a single map in the last 2 macthes they played?

past results are irrelevant and even if you wanna go by those SEA had 2 teams in top8 in Champs (the latest and most relevant tournament)

#52

"Korea is a single team dogshit region with no competition"
cough cough Nuturn cough 3rd Place Reykjavik cough

"A nonamer team which couldn't get a single map in the last 2 macthes they played?"
who ONS? they won the lower bracket final 3-0 which was their 2nd to last match played.
also DRX never beat ONS 2-0, on the contrary it was the opposite
lmao research your facts

Last champs, Sea had by far easier groups. Group D wasn't dubbed group of death for no reason. Literally the only thing Team Secret had to do was stomp CR and Vikings in extremely one sided 2-0 matches

they already said which teams get a bye: guard, fpx, prx and latam vs brazil winner, thats the four teams that are already in the most likely double elim playoffs, the other 8 teams will play 2 groups of 4 teams double elim like masters3/champions and the top2 from each group which are 4 teams will meet the other 4 higher seeded teams in playoffs, kinda dogshit format imo but at least it makes the seeding matches not feel as pointless

The info is currently incorrect I believe. Riot has indicated that "The top seeds from North America, EMEA, APAC, and the top seed from the winner of the LATAM and Brazil playoff will get seeded deeper in the bracket, while the remaining teams will need to battle from earlier rounds of competition.". Meaning that there will likely be no Group Stage play and will follow a similar format to last year's Masters 1 event.

INFO: https://valorantesports.com/news/stage-1-masters-returns-to-reykjavik

This has not yet been reflected on VLR as we are waiting for confirmation of the format of the event to do a final update aswell as placements for teams into the bracket.

caster said from na finals after guard won this:

This could be correct. If what your saying is correct. We would see FPX, GUARD, PRX and One of NIP/KRU/Leviatian get put straight into the playoffs while the other 8 teams would fight and 2 would advance from each group.

This didn't cross my mind but it is a likely situation.

One of KRU/NIP/Leviatan, it'w worded poorly.

Here is an example of what they mean, Let's say NiP beats Lev/Kru, then Br gets 2 spots (Loud and NiP) then Loud skips groups and both NiP and Lev/Kru play groups.

They worded as in the winner of Nip and Lev/Kru would skip groups which is non sense since that match fills the top 2 in those regions.

ty styx

so it could potentially be a no group stage bracket-only tournament like the previous one in Reykjavik?

#38
Styx

Frags

It could be, but as user "iKyoto" mentioned. There is another option to the bracket, they could have FPX, GUARD, PRX and One of NIP/KRU/Leviatian get put straight into the playoffs while the other 8 teams would fight and 2 would advance from each group.

There could be a group stage, more info will be posted and updated when we gain access to more info about the event.

this is my conclusion :
in vct website they said top seed from EMEA (fpx), NA (the guard), APAC (prx), and winner of latam v brazil (if brazil win then LOUD, if latam win then 1st seed LATAM) will get seeded deeper in the bracket (basically all regions that has multislot (EMEA 3, NA 2, APAC 2, LATAM/BRAZIL 2)
the other 8 teams will go to 2 groups of 4 and the top 2 from each group play with FPX etc. in double elim bracket

#54

How is the winner of latam v brazil decided? The LCQ between NIP and Kru/Lev?

ya, i think this format is better for Brazil and Latam, so let them see who is better, than last year's masters it's not fair Latam only 1 slot

yap so basically whoever has 2 teams in iceland, one of them will get seeded deeper
