At least most if not all people I know don't really know much about him except for the thing about him discovering america. So ig most people are ignorant or don't care.

he pulled up to the bahamas and wiped out the indigenous population of like 3mil within a decade, because he kept sending them into gold mines with no util (how tf are you inting as a slave owner)
he even intentionally crashed the santa maria on haiti to force some of his guys to stay and make a settlement, while he went back to spain to dickride some more and get more boats.
you have to be a pretty shitty guy to manage to get your Day renamed to Indigenous Peoples' Day in a country like the us
