why are people labeling themselves some variant of autism like a trendy quirky personality test

isn't autism a genetic disorder?

when people say they have autism, im like, no, you dont. you have a hobby and/or ur socially awkward and/or just weird

like say something else like my little pony cutie mark instead of misusing a real word

how often is it genetic? and how different can it get before it doesn't fit the umbrella

roughly 80-90% i believe, and thats not really a question i can answer as it manifests itself in many different forms, im high functioning and probably nobody would really be able to tell unless i told them i was autistic but others cant speak or are stuck at intellectual levels of a toddler it really just depends

i feel like it's really counterproductive and confusing to call both of those things autism even if it is a "spectrum"

wouldn't it more useful to subdivide the spectrum and change out the terms for something else

because the spectrum is not a a single straight line but a multidimensional one measuring differing areas of ones self like social communication, behavioural patterns and interests, sensory processing, motor skills the list goes on and dividing the spectrum doesnt make sense because having normal social communication doesnt mean somebody with autism doesnt suffer in other categories

neurodivergence and its connection with queerness is most likely because neurodivergent ppl are often less bound down by the expectations of society and then find it easier to express themselves

I dated an aspie girl so yeah it goes way far than that

They can be blunt and straight forward so it might come out as rude when they try to explain something

Also they can yap endlessly about stuff they like and not shut their mouth even in scenarios when they gotta be quiet. But that means they trust you which feels amazing because they're so awkward and quiet when you just met them.

And they can have some unusual personality patterns (in her case, the way she walked and her speech was... clunky?)

Anyways, I miss her. Wish I could meet her again in another life.

A lot of people often label themselves as autistic because normal human traits generally overlap with autism. Also, the “spectrum” language is amplified by social media which usually encourages you to self identify based on said traits rather than the severity and impairment required for a real diagnosis.

people just wanna feel different, sometimes by assigning themselves literal negative traits
