They were playing in underground tournaments prior to 2023 before Valorant's official release in China. The main tournament line was FGC both in 2022 (https://www.vlr.gg/series/27/fgc-valorant-series-2022) and the first half of 2023 (https://www.vlr.gg/series/41/fgc-valorant-series-2023). These tournaments were played in the global client (via VPN) because Valorant was supposed to be released around 2021-2022, but due to the NPPA freeze (where games needed to be vetted by the Chinese government), it got delayed until 2023.

Of course, the FGC era was notable for rising teams like EDG, Tales of Eastern (whzy's original team), NTER, Attacking Soul Esports, KONE, Weibo, and so much more. EDG and KONE qualified to the East Asian LCQ and as we know- EDG absolutely dazzled the competition and qualified to Istanbul.
