I dont get it. Like 11 of the 12 regional teams stay in the Tier 1 and the worst performing team goes to compete in the ascension playoffs for the final 12th spot or am i wrong?

The worst performing Ascension team. Partnered orgs aren't relagated, even if they end up performing the worst in their regions.

a "partnered org" is an org that has signed a contract with riot to be involved in tier 1 (until at least the end of 2026 if i'm not mistaken)
this means they will be in tier 1 at least until then, after which we might finally see fair competition for tier 1 spots.

current implications:

teams that have already ascended (teams that have won ascension (tier 2) in 2023 or 2024: gentle m8s, apeks, g2, 2g, nogshim, boom* , xlg and drg) are the only ones that can get relegated back into tier 2, because they've not signed this contract and are therefore not guaranteed a spot, meaning no matter how shit furia continues to be they'll be in tier 1 for at least another year,

2025 is the first year with relegations so it's rather exciting to see how it'll be handled.

*boom are replacing bleed, who got kicked from vct for not paying their players' wages

there is 2 ascension teams in each region, the best performing in champs stays another year and the other has to re-compete in ascension.
if both teams qual for champs it is whoever wins the most games.
not sure wht happens if neither qual, maybe tehy both recompete?

ascension teams are
Pacific: Boom esports and nongshim redfoce
America : G2 and 2G
EMEA : Apeks and Gentle Mates
China : XLG and Idk actually

If a team does not make playoffs, they are simply kicked out
If a team makes playoffs, they will recompete in ascension
If a team makes champs, and either the other ascension team doesn't, or they perform better than the other ascension team, they stay, and the other team recompetes

Both teams can be kicked out completely, and both teams can recompete, but both cannot make it through entirely

No; only teams who come from Ascension are subject to relegation.
If an Ascension team doesn't makes split 2 playoffs they are directly relegated to T2, if they make playoffs of split 2 they have the oppurtunity to compete in Ascension to protect their current spot, if they make champs they automatically stay in the league for 1 more year.
But, as there currently are two Ascension teams in each league, if both of them make champs, then the one that performs the best there will stay in T1 and the other one goes to Ascension. If both of them make playoffs but don't qualify to champs they both fight in Ascension and if none of them make playoffs they both get relegated, which implies that the Top 2 at Ascension would directly get a spot in T1 regardless of wether they win it or not.
(I might be wrong on the last part but I think that's pretty mich it)

Rules for Teams Qualified from Ascension

Beginning this year, non-partnered teams that qualified from Ascension will either be relegated to the VCL, have the chance to defend their spot or automatically qualify for the VCT for the following season based on their placing:

  • Finishing 9th–12th automatically relegates the team back to Challengers, with no chance to play in VCT for the next year.
  • If both non-partnered teams are automatically relegated, then the Ascension runner-up qualifies for the VCT in addition to the winner.
  • Implemented to a degree entering the season in the Pacific League as Ascension 2024 runner-up BOOM Esports replaces Ascension 2023 winner Bleed Esports after Bleed is removed as part of penalties.
  • Finishing 5th–8th (not qualifying for Champions, but qualifying for Stage 2 Playoffs, or finish in the top 8 (including joint 8th) overall based on Championship Points) means the team can compete at Ascension to retain their VCT berth.
  • Finishing in the Top 4 (qualifying for Champions) automatically qualifies the team for the VCT for the following year.
  • If both non-partnered teams qualify for Champions, then the team that places higher at Champions automatically retains their spot and the team that places lower will have the chance to compete for their spot at Ascension.
