In nature, there are 2 genders - male and female. If a "human being" feels like he is neither of these two, then he/she calls himself/herself "non-binary".
After reading about it for quite a while and seeing other people post about it, my best understanding is that it's like a girlie boy or boyish girl type of thing, a mix of both genders
its the absence of being a man/woman, but it doesnt nullify their masculinity/femininity. in fact, AMAB NB's can be fem

Binary is a system (sometimes of two). Non being binary is not being part of female or male gender and maybe others too
