hello guys

im a yr 12 from nz and ive got subject choices for yr13 soon
just wanted to ask for advice on english:
Should i take it in year 13 or not?
im currently doing the Cambridge AS english curriculum and im doing kinda shit(midterm exams was like a D) but my other subjects are really strong(straight As).
looking to study at aussie uk singapore or hongkong for uni doing actuary/comsci/data analytics and ive heard from people that english isnt necessary but my main concern is that uni will see my english mark and not want me lol

but nz is a recognised english speaking country so idk
ive asked alot of people including my school and most of them just tell me to check online but when i check online it doesnt say shit. hope someone on vlr can help me

thank you for taking your time to read this

tbh looking at how many students have lower english speaking fluency at places like Imperial, I dont think it will matter much. They will most likely not like the grade itself, but it being in English i cant imagine would strike any concerns.

Like you say English isn’t really necessary, most unis require a pass at whatever exams you take when you’re 16 (GCSE in Britain), if you feel like it’s gonna weigh you down you’re better off doing something a little more relevant to the subject you wish to pursue

nah im nz citizen but still like for example auckland univeristy has a minimum requirement of atleast a D in AS english which is year 12 english. people liek me would obviously think better school obviously means higher english and grade requirements right?

although auckland isn't like top 10 uni in the world, it's standards are not that much lower then other good uni's (except if you mean like ivy league). If you speak fluently then it isn't really a problem for those fields but english in general is just a very useful skill for any degree so I would say do it anyway.
I'm doing actuarial science (cuz data sci and compsci is so fucking boring), the way the actuarial science works if your working in uk, aus, nz, (i think america?) then what uni you go to literally doesn't matter like just go to nz's victoria. The reason why is because actuarial science has a body that is separate from unis that give you 8 exams, going to unis in one of the previously mentioned countries will do 3ish of them then you get a job that will sponsor you while you do the rest. actuarial science is in demand everywhere so it doesn't matter what uni you go to, anyone will hire you. Similar idea to data science as well (not compsci from my understanding though).

youd have to read on how uk's body does it there but I assume your unis will do some of the exams as well. math and actuarial science obv have math overlap but also lots of econ shit so if your later years its harder to switch

i mean it depends where u wanna work in the future if u wanna work in east asian countries like china, japan, korea, hong kong then english is not that necessary but if u wanna work in any other countries english is a major part and ur english must be very good in order to get good jobs
