The major event goes like:

RMR > Challengers Stage > Legends Stage > Champions Stage

The America RMR (which we could call a qualifier for the major) features 16 teams, 15 of them coming from open qualifiers, the other 1 (FURIA) is already qualified there because they got into the playoffs last major. You could call this something like the VCT events, but in this case with BR+LATAM+NA.

Since FURIA got into the playoffs (Champions Stage) last event, they secured a spot for the region directly into the Legends stage, the other 5 teams have to go through the Challengers Stage. The Challenger stage is a swiss format with teams from all the regions that did not make into the Legends directly.

After the Challengers stage, 8 teams go into the Legends with the other 8 already qualified by the higher seeds and another swiss format to decide the 8 teams going to the playoffs

Playoffs are single elimination bo3.

there are some non-valve tournaments/leagues that it is possible for you to buy/sell slots, but they are not the major events on the year
