For me, the reasons I can think of are: the joy of watching characters you care for succeding and growing, as an athlete
Watching them achieving their goals through hard work, its a nice lesson. But also being shown the hardships of sports itself, that no matter how much effort and dedication you have, its no guaranteed that you be a Champion

As someone who competed at least for a bit in the past those things resounded a lot with me
