I've been in diamond since episode 6, technically went back down to gold, but I took a pretty big break, so I don't count it. Is this normal for people who haven't played fps games before or do I just suck.

Depends on how much you would say you were grinding I guess diamond isn't that bad of a rank to be in after playing a while there's people somewhere who've played since beta and are silver
