they serve completely different purposes. if you cant keep distance between yourself and your target a spear is just a really long stick

by this logic, just get a knife. spears are really useful for keeping a distance which is good for staying alive

spears were very useful in combat when you were in a formation with other people forming a wall with spears and shields, swords are much more effective in 1 on 1 combat, knives were used mainly as tools or a backup/stealth weapon, different purposes
