Esports are the NUMBER ONE reason why people play FTP games or want to play them. Period.

People pay f2p games for the same reason as people play non f2p games. Genshin and Roblox arent esports. Esports are still niche and accessible without a big barrier to entry since it can be streamed. Regular sports fans pay on average 80USD a year on merch alone, I could probably count on my hand the number of times I've seen a person wear any related to league as an esport or a valorant chair or something.

Venture capital has the idea that in x amount of years, the game and scene will be far larger than currently. If you can pick the org that is the most promising and is good at establishing a marketable brand, you can potentially make money in the long run.

most sports teams are in huge debt (like my club man u who are in 1bn of debt) but people still invest in sports bcos its an extremely valuable asset to have and its usually big passion for people,basically same idea in esports

The idea of esports is that when it actually hits it big, these investments will pay off 10000%. Especially in America, it's like buying into a pro sports league 50 years ago. The people who did that and were able to stick around through the winters came out billionaires.

At least in CN, esport teams are good ad slots, such as WBG(weibo, cn ver. instagram), BLG(bilibili, biggest video website in CN) etc, they're sponsored by a huge economic entity.
