is there a reason why they dont play together on a non-university affiliated team for vct?
is there a rule against it, or was it a personal decision? They all did pretty mediocre with their respective teams and honestly might have had a chance at qualifying if they played together

Collegiate athletes (this include esports teams) cannot play for money
So if they're on a collegiate team they cannot play vct

yeah but their players are on vct teams, tough they are separated
probably should have made that more clear in op

I mean even if they were to qualify with their VCT teams they would all have to drop out of their respective university
Luckily they were able to compete in these qualifiers since the only prize was a qualifying spot in VCT

wait that’s interesting, but is there any reason why collegiate athletes can’t do that?

NCAA rules not even real sports can get paid for their work

I mean collegiate athletes get drafted to pro teams all the time
They then have to leave their universities though as pro players cannot compete in collegiate competitions.

The catch is, is that they can get paid for doing their own ads with companies as well as accept goods rather than money

It's a really complicated situation that's still being played out in courts but recent rulings have (finally) started to peel the flimsy (and complete bullshit imo) reasoning that because someone is a student-athlete they can't earn money.

I know the CVAL region winners got some sort of prize money but I don't know if the money went to the schools and then gets distributed to the players or if it just goes all to the schools.

However I also know (since I at one point played in collegiate) that since schools outside of esports-specific recruiting have to just play with the talent that's in their student body aren't able to necessarily experiment with roster changes like a VCT team freely can so that means the team has its limits on what they're able to achieve, if that makes sense.
