Map Making

Good evening brothers, recently I have been getting into map making. I wanted to try mapping a "fake" location. For example a town from a television show or video game. Has anyone done this before, and if so, have any tips when mapping this kind of stuff? Most real world maps have already been made and I wanted to test my skills on mapping an unfamiliar place. A place that has references but not like a specific map itself.
Anyone have any tips or experience with map making?

Quite alright brother, I appreciate the response regardless. I was more thinking of actual mapping software. Thanks anyways.

I'm not well versed in the subject at all but I have dabbled in it as I write a lot of fiction and occasionally make maps to augment the worldbuilding of the story. The mapmaking subreddit is a really useful database of information, their wiki here https://www.reddit.com/r/mapmaking/wiki/index should be of great help to you if it's what you're looking for.

I will say mapping a location that already exists, whether real or fictional, is muuuch easier than trying to map an area you've created from scratch. Holy hell did it give me a headache trying to figure out proportions and making sure things don't contradict points already established in the story.

Good luck!

Thank you for the reply brother, I appreciate all of the advice and will definitely look around there. I also have written a couple of fiction stories and completely understand where you're coming from. Mapping a world to ensure it fits with the story can be very difficult.
