How to make earphon and mic work in one 3.5mm plug

I have an IEM and a dedicated mic (simple one), but I only have 1 3.5mm audio port. I have tried buying audio splitters but the mic doesn't work, only the audio output works. I have tried playing around with the configurations and both mic and earphones work when they're plugged via the 3.5mm port. Any suggestions? Thanks.
