ok first things first MODS PLEASE DONT DELETE THIS THREAD INSTANTLY I NEED HELP BUT EVERYONE I KNOW IS ASLEEP AND I CAN'T FIND HELP ELSEWHERE LMFAO IM SERIOUS PLEASE

ok anyways
This is redox titration question:

1 equation:
MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- -> Mn2+ + 4H2O and Fe3+ + e- -> Fe2+
A fully balanced redox ionic equation here is:
MnO4- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ -> Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O

Another equation:
S4O62- + 2e- -> 2S2O32- and I2 + 2e- -> 2I-
A fully balanced redox ionic equation here is:
2S2O32- + I2 -> S4O62- + 2I-

What I don't understand is when to put which on each side and why.

It's literally 2am where I live and im stuck in quarantine so I have noone to help me lol PLEASE MODS DONT INSTANT DELETE THIS

So ez. First balance the two half reactions such that all atoms are balanced and the number of electrons on the left side of one of the equations should be the same as the number of electrons on the right of the other reaction. Then add the two half reactions to get the answer

multiply both the equations with a number so that e- in both the equations have the same coefficient then add the two equations such that both the e- should be on the opposite side so that the can cancel each other.

basically the purpose is to just remove the e- from the equations

Hey bro.....while balancing the equations....u need to balance no. Of electrons in such a way that they are opp. Oppsite side of arrow mark.and while adding the no. Of electrons will be canceled
U should multiply the no. Electtons i mean if 2 e is on reactants side and 5 electtons are on opposite side....multiply 5 with reactants side and 2 with products and add them

well u dont show electrons in final equation . so you multiply a equation so that when u add up both equation u have same number of electrons on both side . so u will be able to cut them and your problem is solved
edit - like fe equation has 1 electron u multiply it by 5 to balance the electrons
(idk why i m solving chemistry i have my physics exam tomorrow)

In lower grade chemistry, you only had to balance the number of Atoms. However, at a higher level, you need to keep in account the charges of the atoms as well.

Remember that atoms in a chemical reaction are conserved and so should electrons (conservation of mass and charge).

So you have to figure out exactly how many electrons are lost and gained on each side or how much oxidation and reduction has happened.

Note that the total amount of oxidisers and reducers should total 0 on both sides (I think there is a proper name for this but I forgot cause I have not studied chemistry for 3 years now.) oxidation and reduction cancel each other out (wrong technically but said this for the sake of explaining).

Also, the total number of electrons must also be balanced. After that, you can basically just figure things out in your head for the most part.

Also, refer to a textbook online. There are proper algorithmic methods to balance equations without even using your brain however I will only recommend it if you only just want to pass exams. Understanding the process is important for every other scenrario.
