Why do certain nations force every individual to join armed forces? I would have simply broken my leg to get by it

Probably so that their population can defend itself or be called upon in the event of war.

Or just promoting people being active idk. breaking your leg wouldn't prevent it only delay it as many countries who have NS have it as a requirement to do atleast a year or two. Jingg already put it off for a year or so.

It's due to very specific reasons that certain countries require conscription.

To prevent being invaded by other countries
Like South Korea against North Korea, Singapore against Malaysia

Less of preventing and more so being prepared if it were to happen.

Singapore population ~ 5million, therefore it cannot rely on professional soldiers for it's defense. Conscription, in it's case, is the only way.

For example here in Finland we are country of 5.5 million and we share long border with unpredictable country with aggressive history like Russia/USSR. Simply impossible to keep strong enough professional(paid) defense force. Having conscription not only makes your defense stronger in case of war, but it also works as deterrent. Attack = its going to be expensive and hard. We are relatively small nation, but have war time strength of 280 000 and reserve of 900 000, that is really good for our needs and compared to what Russia would push over the border.

Also about the leg thing is that here every man has to serve before they turn 28(?) (starts 18, and most go year or two later) unless they have reason not to or do civil service or go to jail. So even if you broke your leg as long as it heals back to normal you will have to go to draft again and serve eventually.
