Ethnicity vs nationality.

This is just what I have observed so is probably not that true in broad sense. But Why do asian people generally care more about the country where their ancestors were from compared to the country they were born and raised in? Again it's just my observation but I have noticed this trend being bigger among Asian ethnic groups compared to other ethnic groups. Not talking about first generation immigrants here but mostly about 2nd or 3rd generation who were born and raised in another country like USA.

It's not a big deal but I am curious why is it so. What do vlr users here with similar situation think? Do you guys think of yourself as a person of the country you were born and raised in or the country you are ethnically from?

Its more abt what you feel connected to

I was born and raised in germany but culturally i have a full russian household. I feel connected to both but lean slightly towards german.

Which country would you represent in case of big events like Olympics if it was possible to represent either or which country would you attribute your success to?

Germany but i wouldnt have a big pride in it.
I think its typical for germans to not be extremely proud of the country if its not football

good question

i feel like if u'd still call urself ur ethnicity
cus for example i got relatives in canada
but like id still call them saudi

im sure others might have a diff perspective tho, it depends on how much of ur ethnic background u got
like
do u still speak the language?
do u know a lot abt the culture?
etc...

Yeah Makes sense. But which country's person would you represent yourself as if you were in a situation I described? So If you were a 2nd generation born guy in Canada would you consider yourself Canadian or Saudi arabian?

but maybe some others would say theyre Canadian

Well that's the part I am confused about. Even if you were born and raised in Canada your whole life you would still considere yourself Saudi? Even if you are Canadian national? Just an example. Who would you represent in sports in such situation? Saudi or Canada?

cus like
a 2nd gen immigrant can still return to Saudi and blend in
theres someone in my class who was a 2nd gen immgrant in canada then came to saudi again
and like
he fits in

I meant if you are still in Canada at 18+ years of age with canadain nationality. Would you care more for Canada or Saudi at that point?

Also what do you guys think about people claiming success of a foreign born and raised person as their country's success if that person has any ancestral link to their country? I am asian and this happens quite a lot here in some regions. Not all of Asia ig. Feels somewhat cringey to me.

That happens quite a lot with indians in social media. Ngl it's so embarrassing when those people do that to bag about India success in international scale to foreigners.

Yeah , which is why I think the best way is to just learn the language ( or at least have some basic knowledge ) beforehand.

From what I experienced , the older you are the closer they are to what you just described.

My grandparents certainly act like that.

My parents lean that way but understand that that is not their country.

My peers are kinda mixed.

But I am always a person of my country( not exactly THAT proud to be one but i know my place ) , not where my ancestors are from. That would be treason ( just my opinion).

Let me call out some overseas born Chinese here. These mofos and their parents are racing to learn mandarin ( trust me only few of them will actually succeed as in actually speak fluently ). But they probably forget that their ancestors probably speak some other Chinese dialects( just so you know they can'tspeak them ) . Mf retrace your dialects first lmao

Fully ethnic Chinese ( afaik), we generally speak hokkien where I'm from , but when I moved to capital every ethnic chinese just can't speak or even understand one. Only few younger generation actually learn to speak one hence only older people in the capital actually speaks them.

My attachment being ethnic chinese is mostly about speaking the same language lmao. I'm not that interested on the culture haha.

When it comes to my ethnicity I'm mostly detached to it. Meaning I " just happened to be chinese " lmao. I celebrate what they celebrate, sometimes do what they do.

To answer why I keep talking about jp. Full ass weeb lmao. You don't love something unless you know a lot about it.
