so I started this series at book 4. its about this knight that goes around french-english area with this lord, fighting campaigns, defending castles, doing side quests etc. it explores honor, brotherhood, duty, romance and other similar themes. each book is about 500 pages long and when I finished the 8th and final one, I nearly started tearing up cause the build up was fucking insane. this is why I prefer novels over anime, tv shows etc.

Novels are awesome, so are light novels. The proper path all cultured people do is climbing the stairs from anime --> manga --> manhwa --> light novels.

Once you sink in a few hundred hours the absolute majority just follow the same essence: eg tropes and character, based on the region the novel comes from. The actual development doesnt have much depth and the plot is just conceptually reiterated in a progressively grander setting. They also tend to tunnel vision on a certain 'solution' to simplify the writing process. Each character, with all their motive, can be fully described in a few words. Actual novels have properly thought-out outlines, characters and actual research (but obviously much shorter)

Western webserials sometimes have some actual quality while still being long form. eg wandering inn, worm, mother of learning etc. But its honestly impossible to stay content with the story direction for its entirety. They're also western so by the end you get the authors entire belief system, view on life, values and childhood trauma imposed on you

Pretty sure it is just a term this days to refer to stories made in Japan, Korea or China or in a similar genre.
The right term would be Light Novels for japan Stories and the rest are sub categories of Novels or Webnovels.
You could divide China Novels to Wuxia, Xianxia and something else I forgot.

Basically light novel is term used to represent those anime type stories based novels made in Japan. But nowadays people used it to describe webnovels too be it from Japan or korea or china or anything similar to eastern fantasy or less mature type stories.

And novels actually refers to more mature type stories you know like LOTR and more of those highly acclaimed books like the great Gatsby or murakami books for asian example. Novels are also generally longer than light novels too.

Basically shounen vs seinen situation.
